Maryland Sea Grant REU - Chesapeake Bay

Are you looking for a summer research internship studying ocean, coastal or environmental science? I invite you to check out the Maryland Sea Grant Summer REU program. We bring upper-level undergraduate students to the Chesapeake Bay to conduct individual research projects with a scientist-mentor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. We select undergrads in many disciplines, including engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology and marine and environmental science.

In particular, we encourage students from colleges and universities where access to marine science and to research opportunities is limited and who are from groups traditionally underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math. We believe bringing together students from many disciplines, backgrounds and parts of the country makes for a more interesting and educational summer experience.

We are accepting applications through February 15. Please visit our website to find out more (www.mdsg.umd.edu/reu) or drop me a note at reu@mdsg.umd.edu.

NASA Summer Research

NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP)

The NASA Airborne Science Program invites highly motivated advanced undergraduates who will be rising seniors in summer 2017 to apply for participation in the 9th annual NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP 2017).  The purpose of the Student Airborne Research Program is to provide students with hands-on research experience in all aspects of a major scientific campaign, from detailed planning on how to achieve mission objectives to formal presentation of results and conclusions to peers and others. Students will work in multi-disciplinary teams to study surface, atmospheric, and oceanographic processes. Participants will fly onboard the NASA C-23 Sherpa and assist in the operation of instruments to sample and measure atmospheric gases. They will also use data collected during the program from the NASA ER-2 image land and water surfaces in multiple spectral bands. Along with airborne data collection, students will participate in taking measurements at field sites. Each student will complete an individual research project from the data collected.

Outstanding faculty and staff for this program will be drawn from several universities and NASA centers, as well as from NASA flight operations and engineering personnel.

The eight-week program begins June 18, 2017 and concludes August 11, 2017.

Instrument and flight preparations, and the research flights themselves, will take place during the first two weeks of the program at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center, in Palmdale, CA. Post-flight data analysis and interpretation will take place during the final six weeks of the program at the University of California, Irvine.

SARP participants will receive a $5,000 stipend, a travel allowance, and free housing and local transportation during the 8-week program.

Applicants must be US citizens.

PNNL Summer Research Opportunities

Good Morning.

I work at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington.  Each summer we host a number of college students who participate in the Student Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program, sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE).  The SULI program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers on projects supporting the DOE mission.

Applications are now open for the 2017 Summer and we would like to encourage as many students to apply to work at PNNL.  The deadline is January 13, 2017.  The following link provides students with information on how to apply: http://science.energy.gov/wdts/suli/how-to-apply/

At PNNL our core capabilities are chemical and molecular sciences; chemical engineering; biological systems science; climate change science; environmental subsurface science; applied materials science and engineering; applied nuclear science and technology; advanced computer science, visualization, and data; systems engineering and integration; and large-scale user facilities/advanced instrumentation. The Marine Sciences Laboratory, at PNNL’s Sequim Marine Research Operations on Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula, is DOE’s only marine research laboratory. There, scientists develop innovations to address ocean-driven energy, marine resource impacts, and coastal security threats.

We hope you can encourage as many students to apply for this once in a lifetime experience.

Thanks,

Tina Perez-Colgan

Job Posting for Tareen Dermatology

To applicants,

I am writing to post a job opening for Spring of 2017.  We are a busy and growing dermatology practice (www.tareendermatology.com) in the Twin Cities looking to hire clinical assistants for 2017.  Ideally, we are looking for pre-medical students who are planning on taking 1-2 gap years prior to starting medical school or physician assistant school.

The position is an amazing opportunity which will serve any future healthcare professional well as they prepare for medical/PA school applications and a career in medicine.  The full-time position would involve assisting the physician/physician assistant with patient histories, assisting with office surgery, scribing via EMR, and helping with all other aspects of a clinical practice.   The clinical assistant functions much like a junior resident.

The hours are typically 8-5 pm, with no weekends or late evenings.  Salary is $15 an hour + benefits.

Additionally, we also are very committed to helping and mentoring our employees as they pursue a career in medicine.   The vast majority of our previous gap year clinical assistants who applied to medical school were accepted (over 90% acceptance rate).   They are or will be attending the following medical schools:  Case Western Reserve University, University of Minnesota, Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa, Des Moines University, University of Chicago, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Washington University in St. Louis.   We are very proud to have mentored these students and we have a number of clinical assistants currently interviewing for medical/PA school who will be accepted over the next several weeks/months.

Please forward this to the appropriate message board.   Interested applicants should send a CV and cover letter to lara@tareendermatology.com no later than Monday, November 21st. Qualified candidates will be invited to interview in early December.
