University of Michigan 2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship

The University of Michigan Samuel & Jean Frankel Cardiovascular Center (Frankel CVC) is pleased to share information about the 2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program.  This 10-week fellowship will be held May 28, 2024 through August 2, 2024.

 

Each accepted fellow will be matched based on their interests, to a laboratory led by a Frankel CVC faculty member. This collection of laboratories is involved in internationally recognized research in topics such as atherosclerosis, genetic cardiomyopathies, blood clotting disorders, cardiac arrhythmias, vascular biology, and heart failure.  Fellows will be paid bi-weekly at a rate of $15/hour for ten weeks of full-time (40 hours/week) work.  The program includes weekly scientific seminars and coffee hours, social events, and a two-day research symposium when fellows will present their research to peers, FCVC faculty, and staff.

 

The 2024 application is currently open through Monday, January 8, 2024.  Please forward this information and attached flyer to dedicated undergraduate students interested in research, especially those that might be interested in pursuing biomedical research as a part of their long-term career plans.

Zoetis Inc. Summer Internship Opportunities

 

Zoetis Inc. has quite a few summer internship openings in R&D at their main R&D site in Kalamazoo. Zoetis is a global animal health company that spun out of Pfizer in 2013, and we make pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and vaccine products for livestock and companion animals.  One internship is focused on mass spectrometry-based assay development for protein drugs, but there are quite a few other internships available in both biology and chemistry that should be accessible from the link below.

Applications are now being accepted for the Summer REU Program in Marine Science at the University of Delaware, an NSF-Funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. 

The program will take place from June 3 to August 9, 2024, at the University of Delaware's Hugh R. Sharp campus in the beach community of Lewes, located on the shores of the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean.  Interns will work with faculty in a research-intensive setting on a research topic in chemical, physical, or biological oceanography, marine biology or marine geology. In addition to hands-on research experience, student support includes a $6,900 stipend, campus housing, and travel assistance. The deadline to apply is February 09, 2024

2024 Fred Hutch Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) hosts a summer internship that is designed to provide biomedical research experience and mentorship for undergraduate students of rising senior status. We would appreciate your help promoting the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) among students at St. Olaf College. I have attached an informational flyer that offers an overview of the program and a brief snapshot of important dates below, including how to apply.

 

About the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

The SURP is an intensive, 9-week internship designed to provide research experience and mentorship for rising-senior undergraduate students who are interested in biomedical research. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, students will:

  • Complete an independent research project;
  • Attend weekly research seminars;
  • Participate in professional development workshops designed to facilitate the preparation of competitive applications for graduate/medical school; and
  • Present their findings at a competitive poster session.

The program will run from Monday, June 17 – Friday, August 162024An online application for the 2024 SURP is now available on the SURP website.

 

The application deadline is midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Friday, January 5, 2024. Letters of recommendation for up to two references are due by midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Friday, January 12, 2024.

Mayo Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program

 





Are you looking for a research experience for next summer? If yes, then you should apply to participate in biomedical research at the Mayo Clinic to gain valuable skills related to basic science, critical thinking, teamwork, and other key areas to prepare you for a future as a PhD or MD-PhD research scientist.

This position is open to current undergraduate St. Olaf students who will be a junior or senior for the 2024-25 school year, who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale), and who are seriously considering a biomedical research career as a PhD or MD-PhD. Domestic and international students who are attending St. Olaf College as full-time students are eligible to apply.

The Mayo Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program provides opportunities for current college students interested in expanding their research experience in a variety of specialized research areas. For this St. Olaf position, preference will be given to candidates interested in biochemistry or molecular biology, but students may apply for any of the following research areas:
 
   Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
   Biomedical Engineering and Physiology
   Clinical and Translation Sciences
   Immunology
   Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics
   Neuroscience

Benefits

·       Stipend: Undergraduate students receive $750 per week and graduate students will receive $950 per week.

·       Travel: A total of $1,000 travel reimbursement for inbound and outbound expenses for participants who live more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned hosting site, and who are paying for housing onsite is available.

·       Housing Allowance: A housing allowance of $400/week is provided to participants whose home of record is more than fifty miles, one-way, from their assigned hosting facility, move onsite for the duration of their appointment, and are paying for housing while onsite. Alternatively, for those whose appointment is 100% virtual, a $50 virtual allowance will be added.

Appointment Details

·       Appointments will be for 10 consecutive weeks during the months of May-July. Factors such as class schedules, housing availability and facility schedules may be taken into consideration when determining appointment start and end dates.

·       Interns will be assigned to research projects and/or other technical activities under the guidance of a DHS mentor.

·       An appointment involves daily participation at the host facility with the HS-POWER participant in residence at the specified location. Virtual appointments may be available for some appointments. 

·       HS-POWER participants are required to have health insurance coverage during the appointment period and to provide proof of this coverage prior to the start of the appointment.

Nature of Appointment

Participants will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DHS, or the hosting facility. Instead, participants will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE Letter of Appointment and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications

o   Full-time enrollment as a freshman, sophomore or junior undergraduate student at a U.S. accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university during the 2023-2024 academic year.

o   Full-time enrollment as a senior undergraduate student at a U.S. accredited 4-year college or university during the 2023-2024 academic year and plans to be enrolled as a graduate student at a U.S. accredited college or university for Fall 2024.

o   Full-time enrollment as a graduate student at a U.S. accredited college or university during the 2023-2024 academic year, and plan to continue enrollment in Fall 2024.

Additional Information

·       For students enrolled at a 2-year institution during the 2023-2024 academic year: Internship assignment is contingent on the student providing proof of application to a 4-year institution at the time appointment is accepted. Proof of enrollment in the 4-year institution for fall 2024 will be required upon appointment.

·       For undergraduate seniors graduating in spring or summer 2024: Internship assignment is contingent on the student providing proof of application to an accredited graduate institution at the time appointment is accepted. Proof of enrollment/acceptance in graduate school for fall 2024 will be required upon appointment.

·       Graduate students with an expected graduation date prior to the Summer 2024 term are not eligible to participate.

·       Students must demonstrate interest in research and development of innovative, next-generation homeland security solutions with potential for broad impact that align with the DHS mission to safeguard the American people, our homeland, and our values.

·       Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated history of work, undergraduate research experience, or service learning/volunteer roles.
