The UIC College of Pharmacy at Rockford is inviting current undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in pharmacy to apply for the Summer Pharmacy Institute (SPI). The SPI allows students to explore different areas of the pharmacy profession, including a full day workshop devoted to current trends, research, and activities in each of the following focus areas: Hospital, Ambulatory Care, Industry/Research & Development, Community, and Professionalism in the Field.

Applicants must be current undergraduate students, and it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that applicants have taken undergraduate level coursework in biology, chemistry,and/or anatomy & physiology, as well as have a strong interest in the pharmacy career field.

When:  June 5-9, 2017

Cost: $100

The cost to attend this institute is $100, which will include a t-shirt and lunch each day.  Payment is due to UIC following admission.  Please note that while lunch will be served, housing will not be provided.

Summer research opportunity

Summer experience investigating the effect of radionuclides on the environment

Students will work both in the field and lab to investigate the impacts of radionuclides  on the environment first hand. You will examine i) the fate of radionuclides in environmental systems; ii) the impact of radionuclides on the environment; and iii) biogeochemical and physiological processes by means of tracer studies. This program teams with Savannah River Ecology Lab (SREL), which studies radioecology in national and international arenas (e.g., Chernobyl and Fukushima) and houses the only chronic low-dose experimental facility in the world. Aurora Pharmaceutical, LLC, provides an opportunity for chemical safety research for one (1) St. Olaf Student intern centered on chemical evaluation and the safety of those chemicals in our facility. The student intern will spend time working with a variety of chemists, quality assurance personnel, and company managers, but will also be expected to work independently researching and drawing conclusions on numerous toxic and non-toxic chemicals. 

The student’s main project will be the evaluation of all raw materials and finished products in our facility. Each material will be assessed based on the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and other scientific resources, and classified into a toxicity category. Upon determination of toxicity, review of necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for each material will be determined (i.e. face shields, respirators, nitrile-free gloves, etc.) and documented in a formal assessment. The student will then update all relevant records and documents following all government documentation regulations and Aurora policies and procedures. Project will be extremely important in keeping employees safe during all stages of sample and raw material handling and for the company when addressing
internal and external audits for material formal assessments.  

Intern will work at Aurora Pharmaceutical’s facility, approximately 40 hours a week, for 4 weeks depending on completion of project. 

Qualifications

·       Sophomore, Junior or Senior with strong academic record

·       Strong research and analytical abilities, ability to extend knowledge and skills to the topic at hand and to conceptualize and frame relevant questions

·       Strength in balancing multiple tasks and while understanding how all tasks interrelate

·       Evidence of effectiveness working independently, demonstrated self-starter

·       Learns quickly

·       Ability to interact well with all kinds of people

·       Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, etc.)

I am writing to post a job opening for Spring of 2017.  We are a busy and growing dermatology practice (www.tareendermatology.com) in the Twin Cities looking to hire clinical assistants for 2017.  Ideally, we are looking for pre-medical students who are planning on taking 1-2 gap years prior to starting medical school or physician assistant school.

The position is an amazing opportunity which will serve any future healthcare professional well as they prepare for medical/PA school applications and a career in medicine.  The full-time position would involve assisting the physician/physician assistant with patient histories, assisting with office surgery, scribing via EMR, and helping with all other aspects of a clinical practice.   The clinical assistant functions much like a junior resident.

The hours are typically 8-5 pm, with no weekends or late evenings.  Salary is $15 an hour + benefits.  

Additionally, we also are very committed to helping and mentoring our employees as they pursue a career in medicine.   The vast majority of our previous gap year clinical assistants who applied to medical school were accepted (over 90% acceptance rate).   They are or will be attending the following medical schools:  Case Western Reserve University, University of Minnesota, Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa, Des Moines University, University of Chicago, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Washington University in St. Louis.   We are very proud to have mentored these students and we have a number of clinical assistants currently interviewing for medical/PA school who will be accepted over the next several weeks/months.

American Meteorological Society Graduate Fellowship

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is pleased to invite applications for the AMS Graduate Fellowship Program. The program is unique opportunities for the outstanding students looking to pursue graduate education in the atmospheric or related sciences. Mission of the programs is providing financial assistance to the students. The fellowship program will provide a $25,000 stipend to each fellowship recipient for a nine-month period in the academic year and in addition, partial travel support to attend the AMS Annual Meeting.

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) was founded in 1919 by Charles Franklin Brooks. It is the nation’s premier scientific and professional organization promoting and disseminating information about the atmospheric, oceanic, hydrologic sciences.

Eligibility:

To be eligible to apply for a fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Entering their first year of graduate school in the fall of 2017 and provide evidence of acceptance as a full-time student at an accredited U.S. institution at the time of the award.
• Pursuing a degree in the atmospheric or related sciences.
• Have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0-point scale.
• Must be U.S. citizens or hold permanent resident status. No age restriction exists.
