University of Iowa - Nano REU program - summer 2022

We are excited to announce that our 2022 NSF REU Program in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the University of Iowa is now accepting applications. We are planning an in-person program on campus from May 30 -July 29, 2022.  Applications review will begin on February 11, 2022, so interested students are encouraged to submit their application materials by this date.  Please see our website for more information: https://nanotech.uiowa.edu/education/nano-reu-program

We can use your help in forwarding this summer research experience information to undergraduate students majoring in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pre-Pharmacy and related areas.

The goals and objectives of our summer REU program are:

(1)    To establish a stimulating research program for undergraduates to participate in a research project focused on the interdisciplinary area of nanoscience and nanotechnology under the direction of a faculty mentor.

(2)    To help undergraduate students develop strong nanoscience research and scientific communications skills and to integrate laboratory safety scientific and ethics into their everyday research activities.

(3)    To encourage the participation of students who have limited research opportunities and students from underrepresented groups (including women in engineering) through vigorous recruiting efforts.

(4)    To encourage REU participants to pursue graduate studies by informing them of opportunities for graduate study and application procedures.

Our REU students’ summer research experience will culminate in their poster participation in a university-wide undergraduate research symposium.  See the attached flyer for more information and links to our website (copied above) or send us an email at nano@uiowa.edu.

Thank you!

Students from the REU program in Aquatic Chemical Ecology join a few peers from other College of Science REUs at our 2021 capstone poster session.

The Program

Aquatic Chemical Ecology (ACE) at Georgia Tech is a summer research program supported by the National Science Foundation REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program. ACE at Georgia Tech gives you the opportunity to perform exciting research with our faculty in the schools of Biological Sciences, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering. You'll participate in research with one or more of our faculty, learn about careers in science and engineering, and see how scientists blend knowledge and skills from physics, chemistry and biology to investigate some of the most challenging problems in environmental sciences. We encourage applications from undergraduate students who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S., especially attending universities other than Georgia Tech. The following three areas comprise the research activities covered by faculty in the Aquatic Chemical Ecology program:

  • Area 1. Biological and geochemical transformations of chemicals in aquatic ecosystems.
  • Area 2. Sensory biology and ecology of aquatic chemical communication.
  • Area 3. Ecological roles and consequences of chemicals in aquatic environments.

Overview

Our ACE NSF-sponsored summer research program places you with a faculty mentor for a 10-week summer period spanning from Sunday May 22nd, 2022 to Friday, July 29th, 2022. You'll design a research project, carry it out and present the results to the professors and students in a final symposium. You will receive a stipend amount of $7000. To live on campus safely, you will also be provided an individual bedroom with shared kitchen facilities in an environment that is structured based on CDC, state and federal guidelines regarding social distancing, face covering, on-campus surveillance testing, and vaccinations. Your summer cohort will engage in activities specific to ACE, but also interact and be co-housed with participants in five other College of Sciences REU programs.

Our ACE faculty (in Civil & Environmental Engineering, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Biological Sciences) form a core group with a strong history of working together on joint research grants in this area, with the skills required to guide undergraduates in basic and applied research on multiple phases of chemical signaling processes.

Bristol Myers Squibb Summer 2022 Internship Program

Bristol Myers Squibb in New Brunswick NJ is currently recruiting for their undergraduate Summer Internship program from June 6th to August 12th 2022. The focus of this program is to provide undergraduates with experience in the work of organic chemists in the pharmaceutical industry, specifically process research. Examples of recent publications resulting from this program, with the intern authors highlighted, are listed below:

At present, there are possibilities for both virtual and in-person internships. They had good experiences in 2020 and 2021 with projects that can be performed remotely by focusing on statistics, data science and DFT computations as they relate to process chemistry. But they are optimistic that they will be able to bring students on-site in 2022 and have more traditional, lab-centered projects. The students will conclude the program by presenting an oral summary of their work at a research symposium. In addition to gaining valuable chemistry experience, this program also introduces the students to many parts of the drug development process, including process scale up, analytical chemistry, and drug formulation development. This is a paid summer internship where the student’s wage will be based on their years of undergraduate experience.

If you are or you know an undergraduate with relevant research lab experience that might be interested in this opportunity, please have them email their resumes and a brief research summary to Greg Beutner at
Gregory.Beutner@bms.com no later than Monday December 6th, 2021. He will follow-up with a phone interview in January to complete our interview process and use the research summary to frame our discussion.

NASA Student Airborne Science Research Program (SARP) 2022

NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP) 2022

The NASA Airborne Science Program invites highly motivated advanced undergraduates who will be rising seniors in summer 2022 to apply for participation in the 14th annual NASA Student Airborne Research Program (SARP 2022). Students will work in multi-disciplinary teams to study surface, atmospheric, and oceanographic processes. Participants will fly onboard a NASA research aircraft and assist in the operation of instruments to sample and measure atmospheric gases and aerosols and to image land and water surfaces in multiple spectral bands. Along with airborne data collection, students will participate in taking measurements at field sites. Each student will complete an individual research project from the data collected.

Outstanding faculty and staff for this program will be drawn from several universities and NASA centers, as well as from NASA flight operations and engineering personnel.

The eight-week program begins June 12, 2022 and concludes August 5, 2022.

Instrument and flight preparations, and the research flights themselves, will take place during the first two weeks of the program at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center, in Palmdale, CA. Post-flight data/laboratory analysis and interpretation will take place during the final six weeks of the program at the University of California, Irvine.

SARP participants will receive a stipend, a travel allowance, and free housing and local transportation during the 8-week program in California.

Applicants must be US citizens.

**We are making every effort to have SARP 2022 be an in-person program. However, it may be necessary to shift part or all of the program to virtual due to the pandemic (as we did in summer 2020 and 2021). SARP 2020 and 2021 featured at-home air and aerosol measurements along with analysis of previously collected NASA airborne, satellite, and ground data.**
