ACS CHAS Lab Safety Teams and Research Management in the Research Lab Virtual Workshop

We are excited to announce the upcoming ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety Virtual Workshop "Empowering Academic Researchers to Strengthen Safety Culture and Risk Management in the Research Lab”, scheduled for Sunday, November 16, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM ET, and will be hosted via Zoom. We kindly request your support in spreading the word about this workshop within your STEM department.

About the Workshop:

This interactive workshop offers frontline researchers in academic institutions the opportunity to learn more about safety culture and develop the skills necessary to become leaders in safety. It will introduce the principles of the RAMP paradigm (recognize hazards, assess risk, minimize risk, and prepare for emergencies) through a series of case studies and discussion sessions focused on practicing each of the RAMP steps. By the end, attendees will have learned and practiced how to systematically do a risk assessment of both existing protocols and past incidents.

Our target audience consists of graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and undergraduates in STEM departments. We also welcome faculty and safety professionals interested in supporting the development of Laboratory Safety Teams (LSTs) and strengthening their institution’s safety culture. If your department has already established an LST, this workshop can also help it grow and mature, as well as build connections among students across universities who are working hard to strengthen their safety culture.

Registration Details:

The registration fee for this virtual workshop is only $25 per attendee. Secure your spot by registering before Saturday, November 1, 2025. For more information and to register, please visit the official workshop page https://Fall2025workshop.eventbrite.com

Upon completion, attendees will receive a certificate of participation, a valuable addition to your resume or portfolio.

Learn More:

I am one of the moderators for this workshop and can answer any questions you may have. For those interested in learning more about Laboratory Safety Teams (LST), we recommend checking out the ACS LST webpage

Thank you for your support in creating safer and more productive academic research environments.

Ph.D. Programs in Cancer Biology and Engineering at Sloan Kettering

The Gerstner Sloan Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSK) is now accepting applications for our PhD programs in Cancer Biology and Cancer Engineering.

The Pat and Ian Cook Cancer Engineering Graduate Program provides training that merges cancer biology with bioengineering. Established in 2023 to run alongside The Friedman Family Doctoral Program in Cancer Biology, this program teaches scientists how to solve biological and clinical problems in cancer science and medicine through technological innovation and engineering. The Cancer Biology Program, which is recruiting its 21st class, provides research training in biomedical sciences, including topics ranging from biochemistry and genetics to human physiology and pathophysiology.

Students in both programs will join one of more than 130 laboratories at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) where they will examine cancer science through the lenses of basic, clinical, and translational research.

At GSK, we are committed to training a new generation of scientists who will advance the frontiers of biomedical knowledge. Established in 2006, our graduate school provides an interactive environment in which PhD students get the full benefit of the close integration of basic science and translational research for which MSK is known. Our programs offer students a wide range of learning and research opportunities with our internationally renowned faculty in a highly innovative and collegial scientific environment.

I hope you will visit our website to learn more about us and share information about our programs with your students who are considering careers in the biomedical sciences.

If you have questions about our Cancer Biology Program or our new Cancer Engineering Program, don’t hesitate to contact us at gradstudies@sloankettering.edu.

University of Southern California Chemistry Ph.D. Opportunities

The University of Southern California has some exciting opportunities in the chemistry Ph.D. program for students applying to graduate school this fall. Below are some of the highlights and recent developments in the program:

  1. The department is home to approximately 190 Ph.D. students studying chemical biology, inorganic    chemistry, materials chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical and theoretical chemistry. Our students work in a highly collaborative and team-oriented environment and have access to a number of centers and institutes at USC spanning the areas of cancer research, sustainability, alternative energy research, and quantum information technology. The department is distinguished by a number of honors including two Nobel Prizes (Arieh Warshel 2013, George Olah 1994).
  2.  The current standard Ph.D. stipend is $41,200 per year. In addition, this amount can be higher with a number of internal fellowships for the best applicants. There are no tuition or fees, and health and dental insurance are covered.
  3.  The graduate program does not have an application fee, and we do not require general or subject GRE. We do not require interviews for domestic students. We also offer early admission and competitive fellowships to a number of students.
  4. The students are eligible for graduate research assistant fellowships from the university. These fellowships ensure that Ph.D. students in their critical second year of graduate school are able to fully engage in research and prepare for their qualifying exams. Our graduates continue onto successful careers in academic and industrial research, teaching, and government labs, in addition to nontraditional chemistry professions.

The application deadline for the next academic year is December 1, 2025. Students are encouraged to apply early and communicate directly with faculty.
