Research Experience for Undergraduates

APPLY FOR SUMMER 2021 -

We will be accepting applications for the 2021 summer VINSE REU program starting October 1st. While we are hopeful and planning to host our on campus program, due to the uncertain nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to host visiting undergraduate researchers at this time. We encourage you to apply. If you are selected for a position, we will contact you in a timely manner with the specifics of the program.

The Vanderbilt Institute for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) brings ten students each summer to campus to work closely with VINSE faculty on research projects in cutting edge areas of nanoscale science and engineering.  This summer program is funded by the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) program.  Participation in the program provides students with a true interdisciplinary research experience in an environment where physicists, chemists, biologists, and all engineers collaboratively solve problems and create new scientific understanding. Weekly lunchtime meetings are held for all faculty and students that cover topics ranging from ethics and the responsible conduct of research to demystifying graduate school and the GRE examination. Each student works directly with VINSE faculty members and their research groups and has access to the VINSE laboratories, which are shared facilities available to all authorized users. Furthermore, the Vanderbilt campus is just one mile from downtown Nashville, which is one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan mid-sized cities in the United States.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • Choose from  over 30 projects available each year for 10 positions, giving increased flexibility to match student interests
  • Receive a $5000 stipend, room and board, plus a $500 travel allowance to offset the cost of getting to Nashville

Summer Research Opportunity

Cancer Research Opportunity
Summer 2021

We invite your students to apply for our NIH/NCI-funded (5 R25CA023944-37) Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program. The program offers a unique opportunity for pre-doctoral students preparing for careers in the biomedical sciences, medicine, and pharmacy to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. Students participate in basic or clinical oncology research, research and clinical conferences, and a core lecture series designed specifically for them. All participants make a PowerPoint presentation on their research project and submit a report on their research project written in the style of a journal in which their faculty mentor publishes. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is likely that our 2021 program will be primarily virtual. Thus, data analysis skills and experience that would be helpful for remote projects will be advantageous.

A primary goal of the POE program is to encourage students to pursue a career in cancer research. Thus, we are particularly interested in highly qualified students with a serious career interest in cancer research, either as a clinical scientist or laboratory-based research scientist. Our St. Jude Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences offers training in leading-edge scientific fields paired with unique mentoring in the St. Jude clinical experience. Highly motivated POE students would have the opportunity to be considered for admission to the St. Jude Graduate School upon completion of their undergraduate degree.

All POE program applicants must have research experience at the time they apply. POEs must be United States citizens, non-citizen nationals, or possess a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States (required by the funding agency). All must have completed at least their college sophomore year by the time they participate. POE medical students spend a minimum of 10 weeks in the program. The minimum tenure requirement for all others is 11 weeks. All POE applicants must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.40 (on a 4.0 scale) in math and science (biology, chemistry, and physics) and at least a 3.40 overall. The 2021 subsistence allowance will be $400/per week for undergraduates, and $480/week for all others.

The POE home page contains links to the program application. The deadline for receipt of all 2021 application materials is February 1, 2021. Early application is highly recommended, since completed applications may be reviewed on a rolling basis. Members of under-represented ethnic minority groups and women are particularly encouraged to apply, since one of our major long-term program goals is to increase the diversity of persons engaged in oncology research and practice.

Thank you for your time!

The faculty and staff of the Chemistry Department want to acknowledge and share our heartbreak and anger over the recent events afflicting Black communities, both off campus and on campus. We see these events and countless others like them as direct evidence of the racism that is embedded in our society and institutions, including St. Olaf.

The Chemistry Department stands with the Black, Indigenous, and Men and Women of Color students, faculty, and staff against racism on campus and in our community.

The chemistry field has been historically exclusionary of people based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability, nationality, and religion, and we are still feeling this impact today. While our field has made strides to increase the diversity of chemists, there is still much work to be done to fully make the field anti-racist, inclusive, and equitable for all. The Chemistry Department is committed to this work. We think about it when we design new courses, develop activities, and sit on committees. We strive to do more. We are committed to actively listening to you and to identifying specific actions that will result in everyone feeling more supported. We welcome any and all feedback and suggestions to help us make the Chemistry Department and the St. Olaf community a more welcoming and equitable place for all of our students, faculty, and staff.

We are here to support you.  We value your thoughts and opinions and want to hear from you.  If you are not comfortable speaking with us directly, we have set up an anonymous google form here (your submissions will be shared with chemistry faculty and staff).
