Gilead Sciences currently has an excellent opportunity for a summer research internship in the Process Chemistry department at the Foster City, CA, campus. As a Gilead Intern, you will contribute to high-impact meaningful projects that will not only further advance our company’s mission but will allow you to gain real world experience at one of the most innovative organizations in the world. You will also have opportunities to participate in special events including professional development and leadership presentations, social/network building activities and local community volunteer programs. The internship includes housing for those that live more than 50 miles from the Foster City campus.

Qualifications:
• Undergraduate student (or graduate student, if applicable) with a major in chemistry
or related field, enrolled in a 4-year accredited university/college; including
enrollment in the Fall Semester after completing the internship
• A strong interest in organic chemistry • A minimum of two semesters of organic chemistry (with labs) completed
• Undergraduate research experience, including general familiarity with setting up reactions, common analytical techniques (TLC, NMR, HPLC), crystallization, distillation is preferred • Must be at least 18 years old
• Good verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills are required • Ability to complete 10-12 consecutive weeks between May and September
• Must show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination* prior to start of internship
Responsibilities & Skills:
• Interns will gain experience with state-of-the-art techniques and equipment while
working as integrated members of the department
• This experience will include exposure to the typical problems encountered in pharmaceutical process research and development, aspects of green chemistry, and process safety and engineering as applied to scale-up
• Under general supervision, and working alongside a talented team of chemists, interns in Process Chemistry at Gilead will carry out research on projects relating to the synthesis of pharmaceutically relevant and/or drug-like molecules while employing techniques of modern organic synthesis
• Typical job functions will include: design and execute synthetic chemistry experiments with general supervision, analyze results, and document work using an electronic laboratory notebook
• Carry out all laboratory work in a safe manner
• Document, summarize, and present ongoing research activities to project teams
