North Dakota State University Summer Research Appointments Available

2022 CPM NDSU Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program

Program: Summer research appointments are available for undergraduate students in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering and related fields, between their junior and senior years, who intend to pursue graduate studies and have an interest in polymers and coatings science.  Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials (CPM) at North Dakota State University (NDSU) is widely recognized as one of the top educational and research departments in its field.

The department offers summer research projects in the following areas:

Synthesis of Bio-Based Polymers, Synthesis of High Performance Polymers, Polymers/Polymeric Materials for Biomedical Applications, Polymeric Nanomaterials, Polymeric Materials Environmental Applications and Effects, Computational Polymer Science

The 2022 SURE Program starts on May, 31st and ends on August,5th. Student participants will receive a $5,000 stipend and additional $1,000 allowance for housing. On-campus housing is available.  Students are responsible for costs associated with housing.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the CPM NDSU SURE program the student must be U.S. citizen/permanent resident or student enrolled in US institution, be undergraduate student between Junior and Senior year for the summer of 2022, majoring in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering or a related field, be able to participate in a full-time (40 hours/week) research program in a professor’s research group for 10 weeks in Fargo, ND.

Applications deadline is March,4th, 2022.

Offers can be made as early as March,18h 2022.

Bristol Myers Squibb Summer 2022 Internship Program

Bristol Myers Squibb in New Brunswick NJ is currently recruiting for their undergraduate Summer Internship program from June 6th to August 12th 2022. The focus of this program is to provide undergraduates with experience in the work of organic chemists in the pharmaceutical industry, specifically process research. Examples of recent publications resulting from this program, with the intern authors highlighted, are listed below:

Wisniewski, S.R., Stevens, J.M., Yu, M., Fraunhoffer, K.J., Romero, E.O. Savage, S.A. J. Org. Chem. 201984, 4704-4714 (https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.joc.8b02254).

Stevens, J.M., Parra-Rivera, A.C., Dixon, D.D., Beutner, G.L., DelMonte, A.J., Frantz, D.E., Janey, J.M., Paulson, J., Talley, M.R. J. Org. Chem. 201883, 14245-14261 (https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.joc.8b02451).

Beutner, G.L., Hsiao, Y., Razler, T., Simmons, E.M., Wertjes, W. Org. Lett. 201719, 1052-1055 (https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.orglett.7b00052).

At present, there are possibilities for both virtual and in-person internships. They had good experiences in 2020 and 2021 with projects that can be performed remotely by focusing on statistics, data science and DFT computations as they relate to process chemistry. But they are optimistic that they will be able to bring students on-site in 2022 and have more traditional, lab-centered projects. The students will conclude the program by presenting an oral summary of their work at a research symposium. In addition to gaining valuable chemistry experience, this program also introduces the students to many parts of the drug development process, including process scale up, analytical chemistry, and drug formulation development. This is a paid summer internship where the student’s wage will be based on their years of undergraduate experience.

If you are or you know an undergraduate with relevant research lab experience that might be interested in this opportunity, please have them email their resumes and a brief research summary to Greg Beutner at
Gregory.Beutner@bms.com no later than Monday December 6th, 2021. He will follow-up with a phone interview in January to complete our interview process and use the research summary to frame our discussion.
