Summer REU Opportunity for Students- Colorado State University

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado State University is pleased to announce the return of our Summer Airborne Expressions REU program.

Applications will open in early January!

We are offering a 10-week (May 29th – August 1st, 2024), full-time research program for rising juniors and seniors and community college students with at least 45 semester hours of credit. Students will be provided with student housing, a travel allowance and a $6000 stipend.

During the 10-week program students will:

  • work full-time on a mentored research project in a faculty advisor’s research laboratory.

  • hone your research skills and learn how they make a difference in complex situations.

  • Join a cohort of 10 students working on interrelated projects in air quality, air pollution and other topics.

  • practice professional skills like elevator speeches and presentations.

  • hear from experts about professional pathways, including graduate school and entrepreneurship.

Who can participate?

We are looking for rising college juniors and seniors and community college students with an interest in STEM and societal impact. We would especially like to give opportunities to students who may not have had exposure to or considered research as a career, but who are curious and motivated to improve people’s lives and surroundings.

What will you research?

Air pollutants affect human health, the environment, and the climate. A disproportionate fraction of adverse impacts from these pollutants is felt in communities with lower access to resources. Understanding health and climate impacts and cleaning up the atmosphere takes many different skills. Participants might develop measurement techniques, analyze measured data, contribute to computer models, or develop educational materials.

Where will you hang out?

This experience is supported by the Department of Mechanical Engineering and involves faculty across engineering and other departments. Students will work at the Powerhouse Energy Campus, a 100,000 square-foot green building that receives local, national, and global recognition for its interdisciplinary environment. Fort Collins, Colorado blends hard work with recreation, with proximity to the Rocky Mountains, nearly 300 miles of bike routes and trails, and 300+ sunny days each year.

Applications will open in early January and are accepted until February 5th, 2024.
