The Program

Aquatic Chemical Ecology (ACE) at Georgia Tech is a summer research program supported by the National Science Foundation REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program. ACE at Georgia Tech gives you the opportunity to perform exciting research with our faculty in the schools of Biological Sciences, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering. You'll participate in research with one or more of our faculty, learn about careers in science and engineering, and see how scientists blend knowledge and skills from physics, chemistry and biology to investigate some of the most challenging problems in environmental sciences. We encourage applications from undergraduate students who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S., especially attending universities other than Georgia Tech. The following three areas comprise the research activities covered by faculty in the Aquatic Chemical Ecology program:

  • Area 1. Biological and geochemical transformations of chemicals in aquatic ecosystems.
  • Area 2. Sensory biology and ecology of aquatic chemical communication.
  • Area 3. Ecological roles and consequences of chemicals in aquatic environments.

Overview

Our NSF-sponsored summer research program places you with a faculty mentor for a 10-week summer period spanning from Sunday May 16th, 2021 to Friday, July 23rd, 2021. You'll design a research project, carry it out and present the results to the professors and students in a final symposium. You will receive a stipend amount of $7000. To live on campus safely, you will also be provided an individual bedroom with shared kitchen facilities in an environment that is committed to social distancing, face covering, and on-campus surveillance testing.

Our faculty (in Civil & Environmental Engineering, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, and Biological Sciences) form a core group with a strong history of working together on joint research grants in this area, with the skills required to guide undergraduates in basic and applied research on multiple phases of chemical signaling processes.

U of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship

The University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center (FCVC) plans to offer a 10-week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) for the summer of 2021. The 2021 FCVC SURF program is expected to run between June and August, but exact program dates and format will be forthcoming.

Program Description

Each student will be matched, based on their interests, to a laboratory that is led by a FCVC faculty member. This collection of laboratories is involved in internationally recognized research in topics such as atherosclerosis, genetic cardiomyopathies, blood clotting disorders, cardiac arrhythmias, vascular biology, and heart failure.  The stipend will be $4,000 for ten weeks of full-time work, typically starting the Tuesday after Memorial Day and ending the first week of August (exact program dates pending). The program includes scientific seminars, social events, and a two-day research symposium where fellows present their research to their peers and FCVC faculty and staff.

The application link closes January 31, 2021 at 11:59pm EST. Visit our website for the application link: https://tinyurl.com/fcvcsurf.

I have attached our flyer to forward on to students you feel may be interested. For questions, please reach out to fcvc-surf@med.umich.edu.

Best wishes,

Research Experience for Undergraduates

APPLY FOR SUMMER 2021 -

We will be accepting applications for the 2021 summer VINSE REU program starting October 1st. While we are hopeful and planning to host our on campus program, due to the uncertain nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to host visiting undergraduate researchers at this time. We encourage you to apply. If you are selected for a position, we will contact you in a timely manner with the specifics of the program.

The Vanderbilt Institute for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) brings ten students each summer to campus to work closely with VINSE faculty on research projects in cutting edge areas of nanoscale science and engineering.  This summer program is funded by the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) program.  Participation in the program provides students with a true interdisciplinary research experience in an environment where physicists, chemists, biologists, and all engineers collaboratively solve problems and create new scientific understanding. Weekly lunchtime meetings are held for all faculty and students that cover topics ranging from ethics and the responsible conduct of research to demystifying graduate school and the GRE examination. Each student works directly with VINSE faculty members and their research groups and has access to the VINSE laboratories, which are shared facilities available to all authorized users. Furthermore, the Vanderbilt campus is just one mile from downtown Nashville, which is one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan mid-sized cities in the United States.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

  • Choose from  over 30 projects available each year for 10 positions, giving increased flexibility to match student interests
  • Receive a $5000 stipend, room and board, plus a $500 travel allowance to offset the cost of getting to Nashville
  • Undergo informal training on scientific writing and giving oral presentations
  • Participate in a field trip to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory
  • Participate in optional outreach opportunities with local high school students
  • Enjoy social activities and a final banquet
  • Participate in a poster competition to receive a travel award to attend a national professional meeting to present their work
Students who are US Citizens or Permanent Residents majoring in science or engineering are eligible to apply to the REU program.  Students from underrepresented groups and institutions are strongly encouraged to apply. Students are to be notified of their acceptance into the program by email by mid-March annually. Selections are primarily based on academic standing and faculty recommendations.
