ACS Webinar - Advanced Renewable Jet Fuels - 2 Feb 2017

The Future of Flight: Advanced Renewable Jet Fuels

Over the interim break there is an ACS webinar showcasing innovations in aviation renewable fuels.  If you are interested simply click on the link below to register for this free learning opportunity.

ACS Webinar Series - February 2, 2017

Thursday, February 2, 2017 @ 2-3pm ET

Stan Frey of Honeywell will profile their Green Jet Fuel™ program, which produces a novel life-critical fuel from a new feedstock which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65-85% when compared to petroleum based fuels. Stan will review the issues involved in addressing the production and certification of a new jet fuel, while at the same time developing a process to produce that fuel from renewable sources.

2017 Undergraduate Research Program with the Urban Water Innovation Network

Sustainable Urban Water Transdisciplinary Research Program for Undergraduates

Engaging Undergraduates in Transitioning Toward Sustainable Urban Water Systems

Students will join the Urban Water Innovation Network community for 9 weeks in summer 2017 to:
·   Complete an independent, guided research project, working closely with mentor scientists, other students and the broader UWIN team
·   Attend a 3 day kick-off and a 3 day wrap-up meetings at Colorado State University
·   Participate in skill building workshops and seminars
·   Attend a Virtual Forum on Opportunities in Urban Water Research and Management
·   Give a poster presentation in a final Urban Water Sustainability Research Symposium
The program fosters reflection and builds self confidence and skills. To complement their mentored research, students interact in person and/or virtually, give and receive feedback and support, and participate in a rich assortment of enrichment activities, workshops and seminars in research and urban water sustainability.

Projects for 2017:
·   Variation in Vegetation’s Influence on Urban Climate (University of California Riverside, Oregon State University, University of Arizona, UMBC)
·   Evaluating Options for Management of Urban Flood Hazards (UMBC, University of Arizona, University of Georgia)
·   Microclimates and Human Activity Patterns Near Urban Surface Water: A Case Study of Tempe Town Lake, Arizona (Arizona State University)
·   Water Resouces and Heat Emergencies (Arizona State University)
·   Natural Solutions for Urban Watershed Sustainability (Brooklyn College CUNY)
·   Visualizing Urban Water Sustainability Indicators within a Video Game for Collecting Water Management Ideas from Gamers (Colorado State University)
·   Non-Darcian Flow Regimes in the Biscayne Aquifer of Southeast Florida (Florida International University)
·   Water Affordability Case Studies (Michigan State University)
·   Transitions to Socially Equitable and Environmentally Just Sustainable Urban Water Systems (Northeastern University)
·   Characterizing the Urban Energy Water Nexus through Modeling and Data Analysis (Princeton University)
·   System-of-Systems Analysis of Water Infrastructure Resilience under Climate Change Impacts (Texas A&M University)

Dates: May 31 to August 2, 2017 (9 weeks)
Eligibility:  Undergraduate freshmen, sophomores, juniors or first semester seniors. Must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. or its possessions.

NSF-REU Georgia Tech: Aquatic Chemical Ecology

and includes program details, contact information, and instructions for application.

The application deadline is February 15, 2017.  The full-time, 10-week program will start May 22 and run until July 28.  Participants will receive a stipend of $5000 plus accommodations with kitchen facilities in university housing, and help with travel expenses to and from Atlanta.

Students can go to the website to get more information and to apply.  Any U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program is eligible, unless they have already been part of an NSF-REU program in Ocean Sciences or unless they will graduate before this summer.  They are particularly interested in attracting minority students and in reaching students at non-PhD granting universities.

The research theme of Aquatic Chemical Ecology is broadly interpreted. There are 3 core areas of research for students to choose from: Biological and geochemical transformations of chemicals in aquatic ecosystems; Sensory biology and ecology of aquatic chemical communication; Ecological roles and consequences of chemicals in aquatic environments.  This program is an excellent choice for undergraduates majoring in any field of biology, chemistry, earth/ocean science, civil engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, and related bioengineering areas who want to apply their classroom learning to an interdisciplinary research environment to solve complex scientific problems and learn about the importance of chemically-mediated processes.

REU - U Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

We are happy to announce the seventh year of the Illinois Research Experience for Undergraduates program, with support from the 3M Foundation.  I write to invite students to apply to do summer research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  The program will run for 10 weeks, May 30 – August 4, 2017.

We particularly seek domestic students who have not previously conducted research, are members of underrepresented groups (including women), or are first-generation college attendees.  Students who have completed coursework at the sophomore to junior level by June 1, 2017 are our intended scholarship recipients.  Because of high demand for our program in prior years, applicants should be planning to obtain a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry or related fields between January 1, 2018 and August 31, 2019.

The scholarship provides:

*$5,000 stipend for a ten-week stay in our department
*Housing at Europa House in Urbana, within walking distance to the Department of Chemistry and the rest of the campus
*Round trip travel cost (up to $800)

We do require that students have at least two semesters of organic chemistry lecture and laboratory, and they should also be inclined to pursue graduate studies in chemistry.  Applications may be made at the website http://chemistry.illinois.edu/reu/.  For detailed information about the research areas of individual faculty members, please see http://www.chemistry.illinois.edu/faculty/index.html

Students should apply as soon as possible. Applications received by February 15, 2017 will receive full consideration.   Given heavy demand for our program, files incomplete at 11:59 PM on the closing date will not be kept open for consideration.  Letters of recommendation must be received by the deadline.
